100 Mile Market in The Globe and Mail.
The Vision
There is a rich heritage of diverse agriculture and food production within a 100 mile radius of many urban centres, which has been overshadowed and neglected – the 100 Mile Market reverses that trend, and is transforming the Local Food producer-to-consumer
chain by;
promoting economically sustainable local food production and distribution
supporting and enabling a viable distribution channel for the producer
providing consumer access to more nutritious food choices at affordable prices
reducing ecological and environmental impacts and costs
The first 100 Mile Market initiative encompasses Toronto and the vast network of farmers and producers within 100 miles.
The Mission
The 100 Mile Market mission is guided by the following code of principles and commitment to;
The value of a wider choice of local, healthy, nutritious food
Practices which promote bio-diversity and energy conservation
Actions to drive rural renewal, support of the producer, skills revival and rural job creation
Informing consumers of the benefits of local food, both nutritionally and in support of their local economy
Innovation, a challenge to the status quo of a flawed local food distribution model
Operational procedures that are ethical, effective, efficient, and fair for all
A self-sustaining business model that is non-dependent on systematic subsidies
